测试 你能听得出无损与压缩的区别么?

耳机发烧友对待听音乐这件事都认真得有些龟毛，除了爱折腾前端和耳机以外，对于音乐的格式选择，自然也不能疏忽。经过压缩的MP3格式往往不能登上大雅之堂，但是你真的可以听出无损音乐和压缩格式的差别吗？一位歪国人朋友用六首歌做了一个小实验，测试一下你是否真的可以听出这些音乐的细微差别，拥有令人羡慕的“金耳朵”。

这个网站一共提供6首歌曲作为测试曲目，每一种歌曲都有3种格式，分别是128kbps和320kbps的MP3格式以及未压缩过的WAV格式。这几首歌曲囊括了不同的风格与流派，流行、摇滚、人声、钢琴与古典歌曲都有表现。要想听出三种格式的差别，并不是一件容易的事：这关乎到你耳机和扬声器的质量、房间的大小与类型、你的耳朵……在十分安静的环境下，戴上耳机，给自己的耳朵测试一把。测试过的朋友都表示，要分辨她们之间细微的差别，其实还是有些困难的！

In the late 1980s, when the engineers working on the MP3 were testing their creation, they picked one song to make sure the compression of the audio wouldn’t destroy the sound of the human voice.

That song? The a cappella version of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner,” from the 1987 album Solitude Standing. The leader of that team of German engineers, Karlheinz Brandenburg, estimates he listened to the song “500 or 1,000 times.”

Going by statistics, 2014 looks like a key moment for streaming music: According to Nielsen SoundScan, sales of digital songs dropped by more than 12 percent, while on-demand streaming grew more than 50 percent.

Despite the rise of streaming services like Spotify, the single biggest way people stream music is still YouTube — on-demand video streams topped 85 billion last year. There were songs that racked up more plays on YouTube and on audio-only streaming services, but when you include audio and video, “Dark Horse” was the single most streamed song of 2014.

The story of digital music didn’t begin with the compact disc, but that’s where it went mainstream. Though the CD was marketed as a higher-quality listening experience when it first emerged in the early 1980s, many albums burned onto CD were inadequate, crude copies of old recordings.

It’s worth noting that not everyone loved digital recordings — at first, some audiophiles complained of cold, brittle sound.

In 2006, “Speed of Sound” was the 1 billionth song downloaded from Apple’s iTunes store. When Apple launched the store in 2004, the songs were encoded — using Apple’s own AAC file format — at 128 kbps and sold for $0.99 each.

In 2007, Apple unveiled iTunes Plus, and began selling tracks encoded at 256 kbps for $1.29. The price hike lasted a few months, until all songs were again made available for $0.99.

Tidal, the “artist-owned” streaming service introduced by Jay Z (and many famous friends) in March 2015, hasn’t yet set the streaming world ablaze, despite the promise of higher-quality audio (you can pay $9.99/month for a standard MP3-quality subscription or $19.99/month for access to lossless quality; there is no free option) and higher-than-Spotify royalty rates for musicians.

Despite the high-profile launch, Jay Z has admitted that Tidal’s hi-def tier isn’t for everybody. In April, he told NYU students, “If you have a $10 pair of headphones, you should probably buy the $9.99 plan.”
