Sorry，I didn't quite catch you
我的一个朋友刚来美国不到一个月，前两天她跟我抱怨说还不太适应，因为有些美国人说话太快了，她需要时间来反应，所以不太能跟上。
于是她常常说：Sorry，can you say it again? Or Pardon?
可是一个偶然的机会呢，她听老美说：“Sorry，I didn't quite catch you.”
这句话是什么意思呢，是我没有抓住你吗？
按照我们的套路，大家都知道肯定不是这个意思对吧。
那究竟应该怎么理解”I didn't catch you“这句话呢？
Actually，this sentence will help you when you don’t understand something even though you have heard it.
When someone said something hastily or in a fast pace, you missed some parts of it, you can say “sorry, I didn’t（quite）catch you/I didn’t （quite）catch that.
有时候，可能因为对方说得太快你没有听清，或者漏掉某个部分，那你可以说，
“Sorry，I didn't catch you/that”，which carries the meaning of “ Do you mind saying it again or saying it slowly.
This expression is often used like this: Do you mind repeating that? I didn't quite catch what you said. 'Catch' in this sense is similar to 'grasp'.
表达的意思是：不好意思，可以请你再说一遍或者请你说慢一些吗？我没有听到你说什么。“catch”在这的意思跟“grasp”的意思差不多，那grasp在这是理解、掌握的意思。
比如说，说话的人说的很快, 你漏听了某个部分或者没有听懂。
A:One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know.
B: I am sorry, I didn’t quite catch that.
A用很快的语速说了一句《格劳乔·马克斯》里的经典台词,"我曾在我的睡衣里射杀了一头大象。B没有听清或者听懂A说的话，所以他说“I didn't catch that”.
再比如说，某人说话很小声，或者环境比较吵，你没有听清，这个时候你可以说：“Sorry, I didn’t quite catch you, could you please say it louder?”
真不好意思，我没有听清，你可以说大声一点吗？其实和I didn't hear you是差不多的意思。
These short phrases are polite ways to communicate that you didn't hear or don't understand something in the English language.
Sorry? Excuse me? ... I'm sorry, I didn't catch that.
catchup
这个表达大家都学会了吗？说到catch这个词，我想跟大家分享一个很有意思的单词。
大家知道番茄酱怎么说吗？If directly translate it, it would be tomato sauce, right?
如果直译的话，我们会说tomato sauce，对吗？
However，American people say “catchup”. 事实上，美国人用catchup来表达番茄酱的意思。
我第一次听到这个词，是在一家西餐厅，因为我点了French fries（薯条），所以服务员问我说 “Do you want catchup？”
字面上的意思是你想要跟上或者赶上吗？可是在那个语境下，我知道一定不是这个意思，也猜到了可能是某种配料，结果一上来，我发现catchup其实就是番茄酱，怎么样，是不是很有意思?
