对他来说，做一个基督徒，我想也是一个反主流的事情。他信主是在70年代末、80年代初。1978年在南加州，有一个犹太人基督徒音乐人，名叫卡夏（Kasha），他带领迪伦一起学，一起祷告。然后迪伦信主，还在教会参加过门徒训练的课程。所以当时非常轰动的新闻就是迪伦公开宣布自己成为一个“重生得救”（born-again）的基督徒。他信主以后很快就发表了几张现代福音音乐专辑，包括《慢火车来了》（Slow Train Coming）、《得救》（Saved）和《爱的枪击》（Shot of Love）。而且他当年得到格莱美奖，就是因为其中一首跟有关的单曲，叫《你总得做一个人的奴仆》（Gotta Serve Somebody）。

迪伦说：“世界上只有两种人，一种是幸存的，一种是迷失的。”他说很多人“不是在忙着出生，而是在忙着去死“。这都是很难听的话。但是迪伦很尖锐。迪伦说，也许是魔鬼，也许是上帝，but you're gonna have to serve somebody ——但你总得做某个人的奴仆。
